Example (fictional data)

A teacher finds her profile photo used on a dating site she never joined. FaceGuard shows it on 4 pages; 3 are fake profiles. Takedown letters to the three sites are prepared with the links and her original photo; two are removed within a week, the third request is resent to the host.

How it works

Photos of private people end up in places they never agreed to: fake profiles on dating sites, scam advertisements, forums, sites that collect pictures from social networks. Most people only learn about it by chance. Finding every copy by hand is impossible, and asking each site to remove it takes time and the right words. FaceGuard searches the open web for your face and helps you ask for removal.

You start by uploading one or more photos of yourself and confirming that the face is yours. The search covers the open web — pages that anyone can reach without logging in. It shows the pages where your face appears, with a preview, so you can see what each page is and how the photo is used.

You mark each result: fine, not me, or to be removed. Results you mark as fine, such as your employer's website, are not shown again. The rest stay on your list until they are handled.

For each page you want removed, FaceGuard prepares a takedown request: to the site owner, to the host when the owner does not answer, or through the site's own reporting form. The request names the page, includes the photo and explains why you want it removed. You review and send it, or let it be sent from the service.

Each request has a status: sent, answered, removed, refused or no answer. When a site does not answer within the time you set, a follow-up to the host is prepared. You see in one place what has been removed and what is still online.

Monitoring keeps running after the first search. When your face appears on a new page, you get an alert with the link, so a new fake profile can be reported while it is fresh. You choose how often you want to hear about new results.

Your photos are used only for the search and stored in an encrypted account. You can delete them and your results at any time.

FaceGuard is for private individuals in English-speaking countries and the European Union who want to know where their face is used and to ask for its removal.

You can add more photos of yourself at different ages and in different settings, which helps the search find older pictures that look less like your current photo.

FaceGuard is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. Sites and hosts decide on each request; FaceGuard cannot guarantee removal.
